Leap of Faith: A Tribute to Durham Then and Now
In honor of Durham’s 150th, the Durham Savoyards will present a concert entitled “Leap of Faith: Durham Then and Now” which reflects music written between the 1860s and present day.
Members of the Durham Savoyards, Durham’s oldest presenting theatre troupe specializing in the British comic operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan (Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore) will be the performers. Alongside them will be several notable Durham vocalists and musicians from the Durham Symphony Orchestra. Selected pieces will range from Civil War-era songs to turn-of-the-century American folk songs to contemporary North Carolina composers.
The concert seeks to select music that reflects the changing identity of Durham throughout the ages. The concert will be narrated by Durham Savoyards Music Director Jackson Cooper who will provide context and background to each piece as it mirrors the history of the City. Performances will be held at Hillside high school and the psi theatre at the Durham arts council.
