Harvest and Hornworm Festival

Our annual “Harvest & Hornworm” festival explores tobacco, from harvest to auction. We have demonstrations for looping/stringing tobacco and hold a mock tobacco auction.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AND JOIN COSTUMED INTERPRETERS AS THEY HARVEST, LOOP AND CURE TOBACCO IN THE HISTORIC AREA. VISITORS CAN GET HANDS-ON WITH HISTORY DURING THE TOBACCO LOOPING CONTEST OR HELP HARVEST TOBACCO IN THE FIELD. IN THE AFTERNOON, DUKE HOMESTEAD WILL HOST THE LAST TOBACCO AUCTION IN DURHAM, WITH SEASONED VETERANS OF THE INDUSTRY THAT WAS ONCE THE LIFE-BLOOD OF DURHAM.

Durham was largely built on tobacco, and we hope to connect visitors to Durham’s roots in the tobacco industry, and see how that legacy has evolved over time.
