Premiere of “Durham: A Self-Portrait” Film
Ten years ago, we premiered “Durham: A Self-Portrait” to community acclaim. We documented the rise of this unique Southern city, and the “Secret Game” of basketball – and race – that nurtured a dynamic industrial economy and a thriving “Black Wall Street.”
Since then, rising back from the “Great Recession” of 2008, Durham has experienced rapid growth and revitalization, in IT, medicine, and a nationally recognized foodie scene. But as in most cities, we are also deeply tested by gentrification and persistent poverty.
In recognition of the city’s 150th Anniversary in 2019, we are producing an updated version of our film, featuring a new “Ten Years After” epilogue that speaks to today’s Durham. We ask: Are we still a “Tale of Two Cities” . . . and does Durham’s history still matter?
