ADF Pop Up Performances

Durham 150 Grantee

For the past 42 years ADF has made Durham its home and an international hub for the modern dance world to flourish. In conjunction with our annual performance season, ADF seeks opportunities for cross-community collaborations that build new alliances. As part of the 2019 performance season, and in celebration of Durham’s 150th anniversary, ADF will activate public spaces throughout Durham with pop-up performances by ADF students.

ADF will commission award-winning choreographer and North Carolina native, Mark Dendy to create choreography for the pop-up performances. Dendy has created site-specific dance performances for locations across the country and worked with ADF in 2009 – 2012 for performances at Durham’s Golden Belt, the Durham Performing Arts Center, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the grand opening of ADF’s Samuel H. Scripps Studios.

Dendy and his assistant, Kayla Farrish will work with 10 ADF scholarship students in a five-day residency to create site-adaptable choreography to perform throughout Durham and the NC Triangle. The choreography for pop-ups will total in 15 minutes of material and may be performed in excerpts or in its entirety. The material will be adapted to take place in various sites, such as baseball games, malls, retirement homes, business centers, parks, and beyond, all free and open to all on-lookers. The sites will be strategically selected by a project manager. The students will perform in 10 – 15 pop-ups per week throughout the 2019 season.

With support from the Durham 150 grant, ADF will commission a Durham-based artist to design costumes for the 10 ADF students to wear while performing in pop-ups as part of the Durham 150 celebration.
